He lost his father at the age of nine, and his family fled Afghanistan after the Russian invasion. Hajher suffered rare difficulties, growing in the absence of his father. With help from the Peace Corp friends, he made it to the United States where he earned a university degree and taught Afghan languages and cross culture at the Defense Language Institute. Now retired, he lives in the Southern United States with his wife.
